Master the stars, circles, and diamonds to finally discover the true value of your cards.

Do you have a Pokémon card and wonder if it's a treasure or just a simple common? The key is often found in the small symbol at the bottom of the card, but that's not all! From the early days of the Pokémon TCG to the latest Scarlet & Violet expansions, rarity systems have evolved. Understanding these nuances is essential for any collector or seller.

1. The Anatomy of Rarity: Beyond the Symbol

Even before looking at the symbol, a card reveals its rarity through several indicators. The experts at PokéFolio are here to guide you:

  • The Serial Number: Look at the number in the bottom right corner (e.g., 120/100). If the first number is higher than the second, it's a "Secret Rare." This is one of the most reliable indicators of high value!
  • Shine (Holofoil/Reverse): A card can be shiny on the illustration (Holographic) or on the rest of the card except the illustration (Reverse Holo). Some Reverse cards are actually rarer than their non-Reverse versions!
  • Texture: The rarest cards (Full Art, Alternate Art) often feature a palpable texture, like fingerprints or raised patterns on the illustration. This is a hallmark of high rarity and value.

Example of a Pokémon card with visible texture and secret serial number

A Rainbow Rare Pikachu VMAX with its characteristic texture and a secret serial number.

2. Classic Rarities (The Fundamentals)

These symbols have defined generations of collectors, from early sets like "Base Set" to the "Sword & Shield" era.

Common

The foundation of every collection.

Uncommon

Slightly rarer, often featuring evolutions.

Rare

Holographic or non-holo. This is where things get serious.

3. The Scarlet & Violet Revolution: Colored Stars

Since the Scarlet & Violet era, the system has been greatly improved. Expect to see stars of different colors! Here is the precise guide to ensure you don't miss a thing:

★★ Black

Double Rare (ex)

The new standard for Pokémon-ex, VMAX, or VSTAR. These are powerful cards often featuring a shiny illustration and a specific design that "breaks" the frame.

Gold/Silver

Illustration Rare (IR)

A single gold star (sometimes appearing silver depending on the print). These cards feature a unique Full Art illustration of a more common Pokémon.

★★ Silver

Special Illustration Rare (SIR)

The Holy Grail of the modern era! Two silver stars. These are Pokémon-ex or Supporter cards with a full narrative illustration.

★★ Gold

Hyper Rare (Gold)

Three gold stars. They are recognizable by their granular texture and gold borders. Numerically, these are the rarest cards.
